Surprisingly, for both matches, the weather was mild with temperatures in the 70’s and mid 80’s with some intermittent light showers and variable winds from 5 to 10mph. Northern Plains Schuetzenfest
Billings, Montana – May 16, 2026

This day, six intrepid shooters stepped forward and slapped down their hard-earned “Green Backs” on the table, which was the prerequisite to register for the First Northern Plains Schuetzenfest held at the Billings Rod and Gun Club. As expected, tensions were high, as each and every one had just joined the ranks of Harry Pope, Arthur Hubalek, Chris Westergaard, and many of other legends from the Golden Age of Schuetzen! They all knew that if they reported their earnings to the IRS, they would be classified as professional shooters, and if they did not, they would become the bane of all recreational shooting sports; a money shooter! “The thrill of Victory, or the Agony of Defeat!”
Bob Nickloff shot the heart out of the “Mann Target”, and unfortunately, we did not have a prize for such an event. The contestants retired to the Red Door restaurant for the scoring of targets, payout of $180 in cash, and medals for First, Second, and Third overall winners. I believe from listening to the chatter, the “Fest” was the most appreciated portion of the match.
I noticed Duff Sweeney had a faraway stare while drinking beer and eating his dinner. When I got home and was bragging to Trish what a success the match was when the phone rang. It was Duff. He said, “Go to Guns International on such and such a number,” and out jumped a beautiful original Winchester Low Wall that had been totally rebuilt by Dominik Pisano. I asked Duff if he was going to buy it and he said, “No, I already did!”

Northern Plains Schuetzenfest
Billings, Montana – June 20, 2026

To say we got “Quigleyed” is an understatement! While five shooters showed up to shoot the June Northern Plains Schuetzen Match, we had eight shooters call in to confirm they were attending the Quigley, but would have come to the Schuetzen match if it were held on a different weekend. Our own Tom Sackett reported he had to take three of his deceased father’s shooting friends to the Quigley, and basically, he was the driver, getting the old shooters to the line (along with their equipment) and back to camp! Tom, we missed you, but you did the right thing, and God bless you! Bob Nickloff reported he had to attend family business but otherwise would have been at the shoot. So, in theory we could have had 14 shooters on the line. But as they say, “coulda, shoulda, and woulda.”
We had another beautiful Montana day, 70 degrees and good old-fashioned fishtailing winds that were especially annoying, swinging around to come in from six o’clock. Yours truly squeaked past Stan Morris by three points to win the Brackett Match. There was $150 in the pot and was paid to the 16 - first, second and third place winners, except for the King Match in which the winner (Doug LaMont) took all. The contestants retired to “The Red Door” for the payout of $150 in cash, medals for First, Second, and Third overall winners. There were side bets on the Mann target, but since it was not a sanctioned event, it will not be reported. I was especially pleased with the match, as there were three generations of the Morris family Schuetzen shooters on the line; my son Stan Morris, my grandson Keenan Morris, and myself. Furthermore, we had spectators, with one declaring he was going to buy a rifle and get in the mix!
