    Saturday

For the three-day match, our week started on Saturday morning at the NRA Whittington Center Small Bore Silhouette Range with target setup and repairs. Our Board Members met, discussed, and prepped the range for the upcoming three-day match that started on Monday morning bright and early.

    Sunday

Secretary Darron Ross, along with the help of board member Shelby Ross, opened the books for shooter registration and daily practice. Range practice was held throughout the day and was overseen by Association President, Joe Scott. After shooters had their rifles validated by Range Equipment Officer, Kenny Wasserburger, and had cleared registration, they were free to practice for the rest of the day. At the end of the day the tables were set for 120 shooters to compete for the title of 22BPCRA National Champion.

    Monday – Day 1

At 8:00 AM, President Joe Scott kicked off the 22BPCRA Nationals with the Association annual meeting. This year’s meeting consisted of voting on bylaw changes that were covered with the membership prior to voting. These changes can be reviewed on the association website (22bpcra.com) under the “Documents” tab. A discussion was held on the new “full bullet strike” rule for animals that did not fall when hit, as well as the notice for nominations for new board members, elections time and date. After the completion of the meeting the invocation was given by our Range Officer, David Barnes and our national anthem was beautifully delivered by our own Melanie Krone. We are totally blessed to have Connie Miller, as our dedicated match signal caller. Connie resides in Pearland, Texas, and makes the trip each year with her husband. Connie has called the National Match in Raton for the last three years and does a wonderful job getting shooters to and from the line in a safe and timely manner. A very big “thank you” goes to Connie for what she does for the Association.

At 9:00 AM, Connie called shooters to the line for the start of day’s match. We were totally blessed with beautiful weather all day and the shooters competed at top levels throughout the match. At the end of Day One, the following individuals were leading their respective classes:

    Women’s Off-Hand Pig Shootout

Connie Miller, our dedicated match relay caller.
Connie Miller, our dedicated match relay caller.

The first “Women’s Off-Hand Pig Shootout” was held in 2024, after the Day Two match to give our women shooters something to brag about. The Off-Hand Pig Shootout course of fire is “do or die”. Each shooter is given one minute for two sighting shots and one shot at a pig on the pig line (a 100-yard shot, off-hand). If you miss you are out; if you hit, you move to the next round. Course of fire continues until all shooters are eliminated and only one shooter is left standing. There were 16 ladies competing for the 2025 bragging rights. The ladies were split into two groups of eight for the course of fire. At the completion of the finial relay, Katy Stephenson outlasted the others to win the 2025 Women’s Off-Hand Pig Shootout. Congratulations, Katy!

    Wednesday – Day 3

At 8:30 AM, we kicked off the third and final day of the 22BPCRA Nationals with an invocation given by Match Director, Kenny Tebbe and once more, a beautiful rendition of our national anthem by Melanie Krone. Connie called shooters to the line for the final day of very competitive shooting. Weather wise, we were not as blessed on Day Three as we had been previously. As we began our last relay for the day, we could see the storms building and sure enough, we got the word to stop the match because of lightning within 10 miles of the range. Lightning delays usually last 30 minutes, but as luck would have it, 22 minutes into the delay, we received the word that we had been extended another 30 minutes for more lightning in the area. Then the rain came! We were delayed for one hour and 15 minutes because of the rain and hail. After the rain moved out and the skies cleared, Connie called shooters back to the line to complete the Day Three match. At the end of Day Three, the following individuals were leading their respective classes:

    Iron Sights:

Vance Ballew (HOA-48), Kenny Tebbe (GM-47), Bryan Youngberg (M-47), Ava Lemaster (AAA-48), Katrina Sites (AA-43), Joel Weeks (A-21), Ava Lemaster (HW-48), Colton Taylor (HJ-35), Kenny Tebbe (HS-47), Ken Sterling (HSS-45).

    Scope:

Rick Moritz (HOA-52), John Mullins (GM-49), Larry Long (M-52), Jim Gier (AAA-45), Paul Kaiser (AA-44), Sunny Philley (A-39), Shelby Ross (HW-49), Alexis Malespini (HJ-42), Rick Mortiz (HS-52), Steve Anderson (HSS47).

    Election 2025

Election for officers was held for the following: Darron Ross (unopposed), Kenny Wasserburger (unopposed) and Gunner Forcum (unopposed). These officers were re-elected by acclamation and approved by members present at the election.

    The Banquet

The annual awards banquet was kicked off by our president, Joe Scott. After the invocation, our meal was presented by the NRA Whittington Center and consisted of BBQ beef, served with coleslaw, potato salad, beans, bread and pickles. After the meal door prizes were awarded.

2025 – BPTRF Midrange Nationals & 22 BPCR Midrange Match

    Worland, Wyoming – May 30-June 1, 2025

    Worland Shooting Complex

Saturday, May 31, 2025, was our first year as the BPTRF Midrange Nationals. It was our 12th year of holding the midrange event, but we are now a National match. It started out looking like we would have our largest match ever. Unfortunately, due to a variety of circumstances there were a number of cancellations.

The match started on the 200-yard line and by the end we had a three-way tie for the first place with perfect 200 scores. We then moved back to the 300-yard line and the mild breeze of six to eight mph created more of a challenge. After 300 yards, we had more shooters that were in position to go for the High Overall title on Sunday, which would begin the 600-yard portion of the midrange event.

Sunday proved to be very challenging, with wind gusts up to 53 mph. At the end there was only a one-point difference between first and second place. In first place we had Rick Moritz taking home the Overall Championship of the first BPTRF National Match. Loyce Elingrod finished first in the Women’s category and Bryan Youngberg garnered first place in the MR-Position category. Even with the name change to the “Black Powder Target Rifle Federation,” we had a very competitive and well-attended match. We look forward to next year’s competition, which is already in the planning stages and will be held on the first weekend after Memorial Day.

A big “thank you” goes out to all our sponsors and donors, for their contributions and support to the black powder shooting sports. Keep in mind that this is something that they do not have to do, so please support them when buying your shooting needs. They are as follows:Brooks Tru-Bore, Buffalo Arms, Capstone Precision Group, Graf and Sons Inc., Hodgdon Powder Co., Midway USA, Montana Vintage Arms, Redding Reloading Equipment, Rocky Mountain Cartridge LLC., Schuetzen Powder LLC., Shiloh Sharps Rifle Co., SPG Sales, Starline Inc., and John Walters Wads. Please thank them for their support to help make our matches a success.

On Friday, we had the second annual 22 BPCR Midrange Match and saw some good growth in this second match with 25 participants entered. We held this match on Friday, May 30, the day prior to our annual BPTR Midrange Nationals. Like the past few years we had fantastic weather for the events. This match is held on the 200-yard line which is where we stayed for all three “sized” targets. By the end of the 200-yard match there was a two-way tie for first place with a score of 149 out of 150. Targets were changed and we shot the reduced 300-yard target. With the slight wind, this relay ended with a tight field going into the final 600-yard target. Cody Smith won the High Overall with a 418 out of 450 and Brenda Conley won the Women’s side with the score of 393. Given the increased participation in this event, we will continue having the 22BPCR Midrange match each year.

Hope to see you on the firing line the first weekend after Memorial Day at the Worland Shooting Complex, Worland, Wyoming. We can accommodate about 40 shooters for each event and would encourage you to contact us at worlandshooting@gmail.com.
