While attending the 2024 Matthew Quigley Buffalo Rifle match, I spotted some cloth or blanket padded rifle cases, and there were some pistol cases as well. Those caught my eye because I had just purchased a new Model 1874 Sharps (by C. Sharps Arms) that was equipped with an MVA scope, so my usual blanket gun covers would not fit. The maker of these zippered gun cases has versions for both scoped and non-scoped rifles.

These rifle cases are made by Chris McDowall from Miles City, Montana. She had some on display in various colors and patterns. The one that appealed to me the most was the red and black “checker board” or better known as “Buffalo Check.” Regrettably, at the time, I did not think to take a few photos of the variety of gun cases she had on display. What was on my mind was making sure the red and black gun case would fit my rifle, which this one did, with little extra room but plenty good enough. My rifle has an overall length of 46-inches with its 28-inch barrel. There is lots of room in the case for the scope on the rifle and the zipper closes around the rifle’s butt plate with no straining or problems. If you don’t care for the zippers, you might ask her if she could change the pattern, just a little bit, to make the gun case with a fold-over end with ties to keep it closed. I found the workmanship to be very good indeed.

While Chris had rifle cases in other sizes and colors, she made sure that I noticed how there was a good variation in the colors of the “minky” lining, as well. My rifle’s case has a solid red lining while others were green, brown, prints or whatever color she had on hand. The gun cases are quilted like traditional quilts with a thick batting inside to protect the rifles.

After I selected my gun’s cover, I asked her if she wanted to take orders for rifle cases to be delivered through the mail. She said that would be fine and I made mental notes about things to include in this short review. The information she needs is the overall length of the rifle, scoped or non-scoped, and an idea of what color you would prefer – inside and out.

What I like about these rifle cases are their “hand-made” appearance, as there’s nothing “plastic” looking about them. In my opinion, these cases correlate well with black powder rifles, as well as adding character.

Contact information for Chris McDowall: cpaff@midrivers.com or phone (406) 951-0420. The price is $75 plus shipping. The gun case I bought from her, I do believe, will last a long time and I expect to give it every chance.
