On the cover of this issue we have an 1873 Maynard No. 14 Long Range Creedmoor rifle. This particular rifle is equipped with its original set of long-range sights and is complete with all accessories as listed in the 1880 Massachusetts Arms catalog. Many of the top rifleman of bygone days got their start shooting Maynard rifles, some names most readers will easily recognize and many more they would not. A few of the recognizable names that used the No. 14 Maynard include Major Henry Fulton, George W. Hadley, Edgar A. Leopold, E. P. Harris, S. G. Perry, R. F. Sargent and O. M. Jewell. In this issue, we detail the shooting career of Professor Charles E. Dwight and his Maynard No. 14 Long-Range Creedmoor rifle.
The Maynard stood its ground at 1,000 yards with the best that Sharps and Remington had to offer; even if you’ve never shot a Maynard, Leo’s article is a fascinating one.
